Nonviolent Targeted Actions
We firmly believe in utilizing non-violent targeted actions such as boycotts, strikes, and non-cooperation. This is not a moral stance – it is the way we strategically build lasting power in our community. Our resistance is strategic because that is the way to ensure that our movement can continue for the long haul.
Our Key Strategy Principles are:
- Target the Pillars of Support: Identify the systems, corporations, or groups enabling the injustice and withdraw cooperation from them.
- Create a Dilemma: Use tactics that force opponents into a lose-lose situation where cracking down on peaceful protesters looks bad, but ignoring them lets the movement grow.
- Maintain Discipline: Keep actions strictly non-violent to retain the moral high ground and broader public sympathy. This is a key factor to learn. We do not response negatively (or at all) to the counter-protestors. We utilize techniques like “gray-rocking” because engaging only encourages more of the same negative behavior.

Indivisible has been rooted in the belief that organized people can beat organized hate—and that our power comes not just from our numbers, but from how we show up. From the start, we’ve been committed to non-violence as a guiding principle in everything we do: our protests, our organizing, and our advocacy.
Movements that create lasting change do so by building trust, forging solidarity, and demonstrating discipline, even in the face of threats or attacks.
Non-violence doesn’t mean backing down. It means standing firm in our values, channeling our anger and our hope into action, and refusing to become what we’re fighting against. We are up against a movement that feeds on fear and chaos. Our answer is a movement grounded in courage, solidarity, and the unshakable belief that a better, more just democracy is worth fighting for—together.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. If you are hosting your own event, we expect hosts to ensure all participants in your event uphold this commitment. We recommend all participants review our safety and security resource before your event: https://indivisi.org/safety
Indivisible prohibits carrying or bringing any weapon to an Indivisible event, whether or not the person is licensed to carry a firearm or weapon. Weapons include all guns, knives, and other items that may be considered dangerous or that could cause harm. We expect hosts to ensure that all volunteers associated with an event are aware of and adhere to this prohibition. If a volunteer shows up at an Indivisible event with a weapon, the individual must be requested to leave.
Our Values
We’re building a movement to save democracy and defeat authoritarianism. That work requires more than tactics—it requires shared values that guide how we show up, who we fight for, and what we’re building together.
Democracy is for everyone.
We believe in a multiracial, inclusive democracy—one where everyone has equal rights and equal power, no matter where they live or what they look like. That’s the America we’re fighting for.
We lead with hope—not fear.
Authoritarians want us to feel powerless. They rely on fear and division to keep people on the sidelines. We reject that. We believe in the power of people to change what’s possible, and we act like it.
We’re in this together.
This is a movement, not a moment. We have each other’s backs. We care about building real community—across race, class, geography, and generation—because we know that’s the only way we win.
